ABOUT THE CONCERT

For more than 35 years, our annual concert has been one of the most special parts of the year at CMDA.

For our students, the concert is so much more than just the show itself. The excitement starts months before they ever step onto the stage.

It starts when they hear their concert song for the first time and begin learning their dance. Then comes the excitement of watching the routine come together, getting their costume, trying it on, rehearsing with their friends and finally getting onto the stage at The Art House.

By concert time, that one dance represents months of learning, practising, growing and sharing the experience with their classmates.

There is something very special about watching a child go from learning those first few steps in class to standing backstage in their costume, waiting excitedly for their turn, and then walking out under the theatre lights in front of their family and friends.

For many of our families, the concert has become a tradition. We now have parents who remember performing in CMDA concerts themselves as children, and it is incredibly special to see another generation of dancers creating those same memories.

IT'S A BIG DEAL!

Our concert gives every student the opportunity to experience a professionally produced theatre performance and proudly show their family and friends what they have been working towards throughout the year.

But the benefits go well beyond learning a dance.

Performing teaches children to manage their nerves, work as part of a team, remember what they have learnt and develop the confidence to get up in front of an audience.

Those skills stay with them outside the dance studio too – helping with school presentations, social confidence, interviews and so many other experiences as they grow up.

Some of our students may go on to pursue dance professionally, while for many others, dance will simply be a wonderful part of their childhood.

Either way, we want them to remember hearing their concert song, learning the dance with their friends, getting their costume, the excitement of rehearsals, being backstage together and, finally, that incredible feeling of stepping onto the stage.

The concert isn't just one night – it's an experience and a collection of memories that builds throughout the year. ❤️🤍💙

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are such an important part of the concert experience — and not just because we need to practise the dances!

They give our students the opportunity to learn how to remember their choreography, work together, support one another and understand that every person in their group plays an important part in the final performance.

Dance may look like an individual activity at times, but dance is very much a team sport. Learning to work together towards something they are all proud of is one of the really valuable things our students take away from the concert experience.

Putting on a concert is a shared commitment between our students, parents and teachers. We are very lucky to have a wonderful and incredibly committed team of teachers who put so much into making this experience special for the children.

There will be rehearsals, costumes, excitement, nerves and probably a little bit of chaos along the way — but then comes that moment when they step onto the stage together and it all comes to life.

It really is such a beautiful time for the kids, and these are beautiful memories for you to share with them.

Communication

There is a lot of information that comes with concert time, and I completely understand that when you first look at everything it can seem a little overwhelming!

The important thing to remember is that the information on this website covers our whole school — every class, rehearsal and performance for the remainder of the year. Your child will only need to attend the rehearsals that relate to their own dances.

If your child is in one dance, there won’t be very much to keep track of. If they are in two, there will naturally be a little more, and so on.

One of the most helpful things you can do is know the names of your child’s dances. These will be available soon, and you will also be able to see them with your child’s class information in your portal.

Closer to the concert, we will also publish the full concert running order, including the students performing in each routine. At that stage, I’ll ask everyone to have a quick check that:

your child is listed in the correct dances/groups, and

their name is spelt exactly as you would like it to appear.

This is really important because we use this information for everything — concert programs, costumes, trophies and our concert records.

Please take the time to read the information as it comes out, but don’t feel you need to absorb the entire website in one sitting. Focus on the information that applies to your child and their dances.

And finally, I do understand that being part of our concert involves time, organisation and expense for families, and I never take that commitment lightly.

We put an enormous amount of care into making the concert a special experience for our students and families, and I really hope that when you see your child up on that stage, proud of themselves and sharing it with their friends, you’ll feel that it was all worth it.
